Info and Artist Statement

Andrea Grützner is a lens-based artist living and working in Dresden, Germany.

Her work focuses on the visual and contextual perception of spaces. Using a subjective approach to architecture and social environments, she creates images suspended between the familiar and the unfamiliar, exploring realism, illusion, and abstraction. Her photographs reflect both her personal perception and the histories of the places she engages with, examining how architecture and cultural spaces shape emotions, behavior, memory, and, ultimately, collective identity. She is also drawn to the social and aesthetic utopias of modernity, fascinated by their fragility and the myths that surround them.

Grützner works predominantly in photography, ranging from classic prints to screenshots, collage techniques, and large-scale photoplastics. She is interested in optical phenomena that emerge at the intersection with other disciplines such as painting, graphics, and film, where references to the familiar may be subtly transformed or abstracted, and the depicted often remains suggestive rather than fully defined.

Vita

Andrea Grützner (*1984, Pirna, Former East Germany) received her Master of Arts in Photography and Media from Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences in 2014, following a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Design from Konstanz University of Applied Sciences.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Center for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne, FOAM Amsterdam, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Marta Herford, the Goethe-Institut Paris, and the Camera Club of New York.

Her photographs are held in several public and private collections such as the Berlinische Galerie, ING Art Collection, DZ Bank Art Collection, the Allison and Peter Klein Foundation, and Kunstfonds - Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.

She is represented by Robert Morat Galerie (Berlin) and Schierke Seinecke (Frankfurt/Main), and was represented for several years by Julie Saul Gallery (New York City).
